How do you chat in the trade or general discussion chats in World of Warcraft?
Ok, I know how to chat in the guild chat, in the party chat, and I know how to say something where what you say appears over your head. But how do you talk to other players using just "general" chat or "trade" chat? I'm always seeing people talking to each other in these chat areas. But I have no clue how to enter into a discussion or start one. And some times "whispering" is a little too impersonal and just saying something seems a bit obnoxious and most of the time it goes ignored anyway.

- To talk in the common channels, press /(channel number) for that channel. (Example: /1 will allow you to type in the General chat channel). # 1 is the General channel. # 2 is the Trade channel. # 3 is the Local Defense channel. # 4 is the Looking For Group channel. By default, the General, Trade, and Local Defense channels will update as you move from one area to another, while World Defense will stay static as it covers all areas. If you create additional channels, they will be designated channel numbers in sequential order.
- here is a list Guild- /g chat general is /1 trade /2 party /p say /s raid /raid battle grounds /bg
- Maybe my add-ons are skewing this a bit, but I've found that typing / followeed by the channel number then hitting the spacebar will get me into that channel. If the above advice (all by the book) don't work, try this method. You sound like a new player so here's a few tips: Keep your quest book at around 20 or so, you'll find you can complete multiple quests at the same time. nothing like going back to your base and seeing lots of "?" s. Party up whenever you can, you'll learn from other players, and build skills that will be valuable when you begin to do instances. - Something to note is anytime you enter a new zone, it will tell you what channels are availble in that area. For instance Ogrimarr (or IronForge if you swing with the allies) has a trade channel as it is a capital city, most zones do not and trade requests end up getting slapped into the general chat. Since you mentioned trade note some useful acronyms: WTS = Wanted to Sell, WTB = Wanted to Buy, [Item]x20 = Someone wants to sell a stack of 20 of said item. Lots of useful posts here if you were to slap them all together.
