How do I stop my Gmail Chat from automatically signing in whenever I check my e-mail?

I've been getting quite fed-up with people messaging me on Gmail Chat before I can reach the "Sign out of chat" tab every single time I sign in to check my e-mail. Is there a way to stay permanently out of chat and not auto-sign-in? Thanks for your time!

1. Strange. In my account it remembers my last setting, so if the chat was off the last time I had my gmail page loaded, it will be off the next time I log on. Anyway, you can try to set your state to Invisible. Perhaps at least it will remember this setting, so next time you log on even if it will sign you automatically in, at least it will sign you in as invisible so no one will know your signed in and not bother you.
